Synopsis
Sarah and Michael share an intense and uncompromising love for each other. Michael goes missing. We witness the expressions of grief from his devoted mother Yvonne, his confused father Patrick and the devoted Sarah. Sarah struggles to stay in reality, imagining Michael still alive, unable to accept his demise, arousing the suspicions of Yvonne as to what really happened to Michael and who is responsible. Tender speaks with unflinching clarity to those of us who love, who can’t love enough and who love too much. Bloom’s style is poetic and sparse, wearing humanity on its sleeve.
Reviewers summed it up:
Nicki Bloom is new to the art of playwriting; not that you’d notice. Indeed, Tender is her undeniably tender debut; pregnant with a sympathy for people and character; deeply humane qualities which will stand her in good stead as both a person and playwright. Australian Stage online 21 May 2007
Tender is the playwright Nicki Bloom's first play and complex characters, economic but engaging dialogue and non-linear narrative structure make it an impressive debut.

A word from the director
Tender is the first play by poetess and novelist Nicki Bloom. Nicki wrote this astonishingly mature work whilst living in Brisbane when she was just 22. Rarely does a play have such an impact on me on first read. When I first read this piece I was deeply confronted by my own ability or inability to love and express that love. It challenges the spiritual nature of attachment and makes us look at our own relationships. It’s simply a beautiful piece of writing and as it was conceived in Brisbane I feel it’s imperative that Brisbane audiences have the experience of it!
